City ‘Dual Carriageway’ Speed Limits Reminder

Many people still seem unsure about the speed limits of some city dual carriageways.
Please be aware that there are many dual carriageways within the City where 30 mph limit applies, namely:-
· Great Southern Road
· North Esplanade West
· Market Street (between Trinity Quay and Victoria Bridge)
· Virginia Street
· Commerce Street
· East North Street
· West North Street
· Beach Boulevard
· Causewayend
· Ellon Road ( from Bridge of Don to North Donside Road )
· Wellington Road ( from QE2 Bridge to its junction near Greenwell Rd )
· Great Northern Rd ( from Printfield Walk to near Deer Rd )
· Auchmill Rd (through Bucksburn )
and this list is by no means exhaustive.
Some people feel these roads are not sufficiently sign posted as 30mph, however there is a constraint laid down by legislation, The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 – Direction 11 (4) in relation to ‘Repeater signs’.
This directs that the 30 mph repeater sign shall not be placed along a road on which there is provided a system of carriageway lighting furnished by lamps lit by electricity placed not more than 185 metres apart in Scotland. It is for this reason that when travelling along many sections of dual carriageway within the city, the speed limit remains 30 mph, unless stated otherwise, (e.g. reinforced by the presence of repeater signs indicating 40 or 50 miles per hour ).
