Tips for keeping within the speed limits
- Have a look at the Highway Code. Most people have not looked at it since passing their test and many are unaware of section 103: ‘Street lights usually mean that there is a 30 mph speed limit unless there are signs showing another limit’ (Class C and unclassified roads) – This is more relevant in built-up areas such as Westburn Road, North Esplanade West and Great Southern Road in Aberdeen.
- Familiarise yourself with the national speed limits for each type of road and particularly for each class of vehicle. See below or email NESCAMP to request an in-vehicle ‘know your limits’ sticker.
- Remember that national speed limits can be overridden by the local authority and speed limits present at road works are lawful.
- Plan your journey with plenty of time and remember ‘is arriving a few minutes sooner really worth endangering yourself and others’?
- Check your speedometer as you would check your mirrors, always keep a check on what speed you are travelling at.
- Slow down gradually before entering a lower speed limit area, use the count down markers to assist a gradual reduction.
- And remember THE SPEED LIMIT IS NOT A TARGET, drive at a speed within the limit that is safe for the conditions and which you feel safe at.
