Zenith – Motorcycle Campaign

Operation Zenith was launched on 2 April to tackle road traffic fatalities among motorcyclists.

ACC Derek Penman explained: “Despite 2009 seeing the lowest number of fatal road traffic collisions across North East Scotland since the Force was established and the numbers killed and seriously injured (KSI) on our roads falling over the past three years, only one group – motorcyclists have ‘bucked the trend’ by being involved in an increasing number of KSI collisions.

Of the 31 fatal collisions which occurred in the Force area during 2009, this group accounted for 8 (26%) of those who died.  Annually they continue to make up around 20% of our total KSI collisions, a worrying statistic when one considers that they only form 1% of  the motoring public.

The manner in which certain motorcyclists ride undoubtedly plays a major part in their potential involvement in collisions, and the operational strategy is based around educating motorcyclists and enforcing legislation to improve motorcycle riding standards.  In targeting those rider behaviours and related offences which are linked to KSI collisions, we aim to reduce the numbers in the years ahead.

Operation Zenith will run from 2 April to 30 October to cover the main ‘biking season’”.
